Venus Retrograde 2026: What This Season Needs from You

Every year and a half or so, Venus appears to slow down, stop, and travel backward through the sky. It’s an illusion of orbits, but the season it opens is real: a chance to review love, beauty, attraction, and whatever you’re still chasing to experience them.
Venus retrograde 2026 moves her between Libra, her own home, into Scorpio, territory that runs on completely different rules.
Less cocktail party… more deep water.
If you’ve felt something shifting lately in how you relate, what you want, or what you’re still carrying around out of habit, the season is doing exactly what it’s supposed to.
Venus Retrograde Meaning
Venus rules relationships, attraction, beauty, and the arts, which boils down to a few plain questions:
- How well are we getting along?
- How are we engaging our desires?
- How much fun is it?
Venus also rules two houses in your birth chart: Taurus and Libra. In astrology, your chart is divided into twelve houses, each one covering a different area of life, and wherever your Taurus and Libra houses fall determines which parts of your life Venus is watching over.
✨ If Taurus rules your fifth house, for example, she’s minding creativity, dating, play, and sex.
✨ If Libra rules your tenth, she’s minding your public reputation, career aspirations and your ambitions.
Those themes travel with her wherever she goes, like she’s got them packed in a bag.
When she turns retrograde, those topics come under review and excess baggage starts feeling too heavy.
The 40-day descent: Inanna and Underworld O’clock
There’s a reason this kind of unpacking feels ancient. It is.
Venus retrograde lasts 40 days, and there’s an old story that maps onto it almost exactly. Inanna, the Mesopotamian goddess whom astrologers consider an early face of Venus, descends into the Underworld to meet her shadow sister, Ereshkigal. At each gate on the way down, she removes something valuable: a piece of her persona as queen and goddess, until she reaches the bottom naked, unadorned, and unidentified. Then comes the meat hook.
Inanna’s story usually gets told as a victim story. I refuse to tell it that way.
She’s a goddess and a queen, and she goes down on purpose, because underworld o’clock (my term for the moment your own season of descent arrives) comes for all of us, collectively and individually. Sometimes it lines up with a retrograde. Sometimes it arrives on its own schedule.
I read the story as one about intimacy. Stripped of the roles you thought were you, you get to know something from the depths, and you really know it when you dive that deep. If you spend the season doggy-paddling toward the surface, you’ll miss the version of yourself that only emerges from below.

Venus Retrograde 2026: From Cocktail Party to Deep Water
This particular descent has a specific shape.
In Libra, Venus is home: lovely, comfortable, everyone in the appropriate attire.
In Scorpio, she lands in territory that works against her wishes.
She wants perfume and a festive forest dinner; Scorpio hands her gear, sharp objects, and food built to survive an earthquake. She has to find common ground amid discomfort and intensity.
This makes me think of Beyoncé, with her Libra stellium and Venus in Libra: magnetic, artistic, sparkling on a grand scale.
Then I think of Ocean Ramsey, the freediver who swims with sharks. I have no idea what her chart looks like, but the energy tracks for Venus in Scorpio.
Both make beautiful things, and both create meaningful relationships. The gear and the intensity sit worlds apart.
You’ll feel both modes this season. Venus crosses this exact stretch of sky, the last eight degrees of Libra and the first eight of Scorpio, three separate times, and each pass asks you to go a little deeper.
Here’s how that plays out:
Venus Retrograde Timeline
- August 31 —> Venus enters retrograde shadow at 22° of Libra
- September 10 —> Venus enters Scorpio
- October 3 —> Venus stations retrograde at 8° of Scorpio
- October 24 —> Sun-Venus conjunction, kissing at 0° of Scorpio
- October 25 —> Venus retrogrades back into Libra
- October 29 —> Venus emerges from the Sun’s rays and is visible again (phasis)
- November 13 —> Venus stations direct at 22° of Libra
- December 4 —> Venus re-enters Scorpio
- December 15 —> Venus leaves retrograde shadow at 8° of Scorpio
Venus starts tracing this ground on August 31 (astrologers call that the shadow period).
Around October 24, Venus passes between Earth and the Sun and vanishes into its brightness. At the exact conjunction, she’s received into the heart of the Sun king: maximum illumination and dissolution at once.
A moment like that changes you.
When she reappears on October 29 as a morning star in her own sign of Libra—astrologers call it phasis—it carries real power.
She also conjoins Spica, a benefic fixed star of harvest and invention, three times: once already, then again November 4 and 22.
Venus goes quiet and goes deep before she comes back to the visible world changed. You’re being asked to do the same.
How to Make a Sign to the World You’re Going Down
Robert Macfarlane’s Underland shares an idea that we need to make some sign to the world when we cross a threshold into the underworld. So how do you tell your world that you’re going down for a bit?
Maybe it’s a vacation responder saying you’ll be slower to reply. Maybe it’s a day or two with no obligations.
Then sit with these questions the way a mindfulness practice asks you to, slowly, without rushing toward an answer:
- What’s the unnecessary baggage?
- Which rules and structures felt necessary once and now just feel heavy?
- What if if I let this go?
Who you are on the other side stays a mystery, and the season asks you to trust life—and yourself—enough to let go anyway.
Sacrifice is just how energy changes form.

Somatic Healing Asks You: What’s actually in your backpack?
That trust in life has to start somewhere, and it’s rarely in your head.
Venus retrograde 2026 asks you to slow down long enough to notice what’s actually in your backpack: which roles, which rules, which versions of yourself you’re still hauling around because you’ve always had them. This kind of noticing is its own mindfulness practice, and all it asks for is the willingness to stop, actually look and stay with what you find (even if it’s uncomfortable).
Some of what surfaces will live in your mind.
Some of it will live in your body. Old tension you’ve been carrying so long it stopped registering as tension at all.
And that’s where somatic healing tends to start: with finally feeling what’s been there the whole time.
Sometimes a spiritual life or a moment of clarity comes alive the second you finally set something down.
So what’s left once the bag is on the ground?

“I’d gone through so many life changes, not realizing the deeper transition I was in. I was grieving the ends of old relationships and identities, and not sure how to support myself in this new chapter of life. Grace has helped me radically shift how I care for myself. I have much more insight into what is going on in my life in this season, and I can see things differently now than I did before. She gave me permission to reclaim the wild, rhythmic, messy part of myself. It has been a beautiful experience.”
