The Spiritual Meaning of Easter, Beyond Church and Bunnies

This is Easter without religion: a dark night of the soul transformation story that has nothing to do with what happens inside a church.

I’ve had a lifelong crush on Jesus — not the religion of Christianity — but the healing magic yogi man himself. And my crush falls waaaay outside the bounds of any kind of institution or religion — much like Jesus himself.

To me, Yeshua is first and foremost a Lover, a Healer, a Forgiver and an Offering.

On a magical level, I think that the magnum opus of Yeshua and Mary Magdalene’s interstellar forgiveness-redemption ritual did something (like all true magic does). It changed reality on a core level. Though widely misinterpreted by institutional religion, I do think it set off a BOOM heard round the world on an energetic level — a shift in Reality that we are still reckoning with today.

It’s a reckoning that hasn’t fully integrated yet but lays the foundation for who humanity is invited to become on the other side of a Great Leap in consciousness that awaits. That’s why the energy of “Christ” is one of the core energies of MA — it’s a fundamentally forgiving, liberating, ecstatic, passionate embodiment of the Truth of Life itself.

The Spiritual Meaning of Resurrection Nobody Taught You in Church

Because at its core, it’s a mystery mythology about death and resurrection that’s much older, much wilder and much wider than any single religion. It is a core cycle that underpins everything we see.

And springtime bears much of the Beauty of that Mystery.

After the long dark nights of Winter…

After everything has lost its leaves and all signs of life…

After the blueberry bushes have died back, the birds have left and the bears have gone to sleep…

After seemingly going on and on forever…

the magical spark of Life bursts once again through the cold, dead and gray

and brings back all the songs, blooms and babies that felt so far away, so impossible, just yesterday.

Magic. Mystery. Beauty… regenerated, resurrected through the womb of the Earth and the Dark… every time.

The Dark Night of the Soul Transformation Our Culture Refuses to Look At

People are always surprised when I tell them I’m an erotic healer and a death doula (and a somatic coach). They think wow, talk about opposite ends of the spectrum. But here’s the thing… they’re not opposite ends of the spectrum. It’s the same X marks the spot on the map.

How much Life you can access — pleasure, joy, play, creativity — is directly related to how much Death you are willing to engage.

Just like how much rest happens in Winter determines how much bloom there is in spring and fruit in Summer. Just like how flexible a muscle is also determines how strong it can be. Just like how far down the roots go determines how far up the tree can grow. So isn’t it interesting that we live in a culture that stays as far away from death as possible. Doesn’t want to look at it, can’t talk about it, can’t grieve. No loss. No contraction. No ebb. Ever.

This is exactly what shows up in somatic coaching sessions: bodies that have forgotten how to grieve.

Well, then it makes sense that the amount of sexy life force pumping through the veins is generally abysmal. It makes sense that very few people change.

When we understand that death and resurrection is actually a core energy, a core mechanism of how Reality works… it’s not surprising that so many people are depressed, anxious and unable to change their patterns and relationships in a meaningful way.

We’ve abandoned the core truth of how Life works.

You Don’t Need More Willpower

If you want transformation in your life, the regeneration and resilience of rebirth is what you need.

Trying to change without it only burns you out, exhausting yourself in the ruthless search for more willpower to force a change that won’t have a lasting nor desired effect.

You don’t need more willpower. You don’t need to want it more.

You need to cooperate with Life itself, which, at its core and central mystery is Death and Resurrection.

Where Spirituality and Sexuality Meet: The Erotic Life Force of Rebirth

This is where spirituality and sexuality stop being separate conversations.

How much of the erotic you experience in your every day, regular degular life is a symptom of how much authentic death-rebirth transformation you can engage and undergo.

From:

• joy and intimacy in your relationships
• fun and delight in your sex life
• the ability to feel pleasure in your body (whether it’s a cool breeze on a Tuesday morning or a date night)
• your creative flow, access new ideas and iterate
• your ability to take aligned risks
• your ability to let go of old stories about who you are and what hurts
• your capacity to hold power, strength and structure without burning out
• to be the leader your work and family needs you to be
• processing grief and initiating all the way through dark nights of the soul

All of these are things I support people with, and they all come back to the same place… how much can you get on board with this core Life Force Self-Regenerating process of death-resurrection.

And the eternal gift of this process, this passionate Life mystery… once you shed the grief, fear, forgiveness… is The Erotic — a life you sincerely enjoy, a life you are in awe to create with, a life you belong to and supported by, a life in which you bloom.
